Fortuna Düsseldorf announced it would not sign Shon Weissman, a striker for the Israeli national team, after fans criticized the move just hours after it was reported, citing messages he shared following the October 7 Hamas attack

Israeli striker Shon Weissman will not be joining German second-division club Fortuna Düsseldorf, the team announced Tuesday, following public backlash over controversial social media posts attributed to the player during the Gaza war.

The club had been close to signing Weissman, who currently plays for Spanish side Granada. However, after fans protested his potential arrival, Fortuna's official social media account issued a rare public defense of the Israeli player late Monday.

"What's going on here? I keep getting messages," the club wrote. "Judging people you don't know based on their Wikipedia page? That doesn't reflect our values."
