Active southwesterly monsoon bringing thundery showers to coast of southern China and northern part of South China Sea, Observatory says

Hongkongers are warned to brace for heavy showers on Saturday, with the city’s observatory forecasting thunderstorms in the next few days due to an active monsoon.

An amber rainstorm warning was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 6.50am. It means that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue.

“Rain is particularly heavy in Eastern District of Hong Kong Island, with heavy rain of more than 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall fallen and may cause serious flooding,” the forecaster said on Saturday morning.

It explained that an active southwesterly monsoon is bringing thundery showers to the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea.
