Shanta Paul, a Bangladeshi model was on Thursday (July 31, 2025) arrested in Kolkata for allegedly possessing Indian identity documents including a passport. Ms. Paul (28) was arrested from a rented house in Golf Green area of Kolkata. According to the police, Ms. Paul had worked as a crew member for a Bangladeshi airline and had travelled to various countries, including Kolkata.

Police sources said that she had entered India with a valid passport but allegedly created fake Indian identity documents to obtain a passport. The police investigation revealed that she had created a ration card with the help of a middleman and later obtained fake Aadhaar and voter ID cards.

The development comes at a time when security agencies are cracking down on Bangladeshi nationals in different parts of the country including West Bengal.

During the day, the West Bengal Police arrested six illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and one local Indian accomplice in Murshidabad district. On Wednesday seven Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended along with four children in West Bengal’s Nadia district.

Last month, a protester in Bangladesh student uprising of 2024 Newton Das, was found to be registered as a voter in Kakdwip in West Bengal. The State shares about 2216 km border with Bangladesh and about 560 km of the border is said to be unfenced. Some areas along the international border pass through rivers and char lands that cannot be physically fenced.
