Two Bangladeshi nationals were arrested on Saturday for allegedly obtaining Indian passports using forged documents.

The Foreigners Regional Registration Officer at the Chennai International Airport filed a complaint with the Central Crime Branch(CCB) of the Greater Chennai Police. The complaint stated that a Bangladeshi national, Mohammed Harun Mai (44), had concealed his Bangladeshi citizenship and obtained an Indian passport using forged documents, and had attempted to travel to Bangladesh.

The CCB officers arrested Mohammed Harun Mai and questioned him. During interrogation, it was revealed that Harun Mai had entered India in 1999 through the Srimantapur border near Shapur village in Tripura. Between 1999 and 2008, he had allegedly entered India illegally from Bangladesh several times for work. In 2022, he reportedly entered India again using his Bangladeshi passport and began working at a biryani shop in the Thousand Lights area of Chennai. Later, he started running his own biryani shop.

Police said Harun Mai had concealed his Bangladeshi identity and obtained Indian identity documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards, based on which he secured an Indian passport. He was arrested when he attempted to travel to Bangladesh using the passport.
