Here’s hoping a war of words doesn’t escalate into an actual war.
President Donald Trump expressed outrage in the wee hours of Monday morning after Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia, needled him on social media with a comparison to former U.S. President Joe Biden.
Earlier in July, Trump said he would impose “secondary tariffs” against Russia if the country’s current president, Vladimir Putin, did not agree to a ceasefire deal with Ukraine within 50 days. But on Monday, Trump made the impromptu announcement that the two countries, which have been embroiled in a three-year war, now have only 10 more days to strike a deal.
And it seems that Medvedev, who is now deputy chair of Russia’s security council, wasn’t thrilled about it.
“Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10…,” Medvedev wrote Monday on X, formerly Twitter. “He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!”
