WASHINGTON − Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, said there is a "genocide" happening in Gaza, becoming the first Republican lawmaker to use the term to describe the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

"It’s the most truthful and easiest thing to say that Oct 7th in Israel was horrific and all hostages must be returned, but so is the genocide, humanitarian crisis, and starvation happening in Gaza," Greene wrote on X.

Hers is an uncommon statement in a caucus that has rallied around Israel since October 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

Israel has strongly rejected claims that the country is perpetuating a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
