Forecaster goes from amber to red signal, says issuing black warning depends on development of area of thundery showers
Hong Kong’s weather forecaster has issued a red rainstorm warning as heavy downpours hit the city.
The Hong Kong Observatory raised the signal at 8.40am on Tuesday, replacing an amber warning that was put up 35 minutes earlier. It said that showers associated with a broad trough of low pressure were affecting the coast of Guangdong.
It added that the need for issuing a black rainstorm warning would depend on the development of the area of thundery showers.
“Rain is particularly heavy in Sai Kung district, with more than 70 millimetres (2.75 inches) of hourly rainfall falling or expected to fall. It also may cause flooding,” the forecaster said.
