In a case of double murder, two brothers were hacked to death by an armed gang at Avudaiyarkoil in the district on Thursday night triggering tension in the locality. The police gave the names of the dead as K. Kannan, 35, and K. Karthi, 29.

The siblings were murdered a few metres away from their house by the gang. The killers escaped on a couple of two-wheelers, the police said.

A quarrel over sale of a used two-wheeler is said to be the reason for the murderous attack. Kannan’s relative recently sold a two-wheeler to a person and a quarrel ensued over payment a few days ago. Kannan spoke in support of his relative while Muthukumar was on the side of the buyer. This apparently led to a scuffle between Kannan and Muthukumar eventually leading to the double murder. The body of the victims were sent to the Pudukottai Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

The family members of the victims blocked the Avudaiyarkoil-Aranthangi road for sometime on Friday morning in protest against the double murder and demanded compensation. Special teams constituted to nab the killers detained seven persons, including Muthukumar and Kalidas, in connection with the case. The Avudaiyarkoil police registered a case.
