The best male tennis player in America has a coach who knows how to play tennis on grass. World No. 5 Taylor Fritz is working with Paul Annacone, who coached a couple of decent grass-courters: Pete Sampras and Roger Federer. Before Wimbledon, Fritz and Annacone dedicated 10 days to the stuff in early June — on the hard courts of the U.S. Tennis Association training center in Carson, Calif.
Not the manicured lawns of the Longwood Cricket Club near Boston. Not the grass courts attached to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.. Why? Surely those places would be more logical venues for a coach who was part of 15 Wimbledon titles to make the required adjustments to Fritz’s footwork and strokes for success in June and July?
