New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, who is on track to win the Democratic Party’s nomination in the New York City mayoral race, on Wednesday reacted to Donald Trump calling him a “100% Communist Lunatic” following his surprise success, warning the president that he is prepared to challenge the more cruel elements of his agenda.
In an interview with ABC News’ Rachel Scott, Mamdani conceded that he will likely be a frequent target of the president going forward, while urging Trump to look up his platform.
“You know, this is not the first time that President Trump is going to comment on myself, and I encourage him — just like I encourage every New Yorker — to learn about my actual policies to make the city affordable,” Mamdani said.
Mamdani added that Trump has so far failed to fulfill his campaign promise of lowering prices, noting that this could be an issue “that I would be willing to work with him.”
Mamdani made affordability a central focus of his grassroots campaign, offering proposals to address the high cost of living in the city, including one to create a chain of city-owned grocery stores.
