A 700-metre long flyover on the Hosur-Bengaluru National Highway was closed for traffic late on Saturday (June 21, 2025) after a critical bearing failure caused transverse shift of the flyover. The timely detection of the transverse shift averted any mishap. The suspension of vehicular movement on the flyover affected traffic towards Bengaluru.
On Sunday, a team of NHAI officials and an independent bridge expert inspected the structure to assess its structural safety.
Speaking to The Hindu, Virender Sambyal, Regional Officer, who is part of the NHAI’s inspecting team said, the bearing failure could have resulted from a combination of factors, including wear and tear or ‘sudden failure’. The bridge bearings support the longitudinal and rotational movement, and is critical to load transfer from the superstructure to the substructure.
“As of now, we do not see any damage to the structure. The bearing will have to be replaced.”
Restoration of normalcy
