The family of a 29-year-old Human Resource (HR) executive, Akshay Shivaram, who died after battling for his life for five days, has said that the ₹5 lakh compensation offered by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is inadequate.
Mr. Akshay, a resident of Srinivasa Nagar in Bengaluru, was critically injured on the afternoon of June 15, Sunday, when a branch from a roadside tree fell on him while he was riding his two-wheeler on Brahma Chaitanya Road in Hanumantha Nagar. He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, June 19.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the deceased’s brother Benakaraj said, “The government gave ₹25 lakh compensation to stampede victims. But my brother, who died due to BBMP’s negligence, has been given only ₹5 lakh. Is this the value of his life?”
The family also pointed out that the medical expenses they incurred far exceeded the compensation. “So far, apart from the ₹5 lakh cheque, no other help has come from BBMP. The civic body must also take responsibility for the hospital bills. Strict action should be taken against those responsible,” Mr. Benakaraj added.
