The government wants to prosecute those who work and pay taxes while letting tax dodgers off scot free, the leader of Italy's biggest and most left-wing trade union federation CGIl, Maurizio Landini, said after charges were mooted under a tough new security law against metalworkers who occupied a ring road at Bologna in a national contract demo.

"On behalf of myself and the entire CGIL, I express full support, solidarity and closeness to all metalworkers", said Landini.

"In this country, they want to prosecute and condemn men and women who work for a living, pay taxes and keep the production system of our country afloat" said Landini.

"Today, metalworkers, as part of a strike called by Fiom, Fim and Uilm, demonstrated throughout Italy.

In Bologna, ten thousand marched along the ring road.
