Anew joint venture called Edgewing was officially launched Friday within the international cooperation Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) that unites BAE Systems for the United Kingdom, Leonardo for Italy and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co.

for Japan, with shares of 33.3% each, the Italian defence and aerospace giant said.

Edgewing "will be responsible for the design and development of the new generation combat aircraft, maintaining the role of design authority for the entire life cycle of the product, whose operation is expected beyond 2070".

Marco Zoff, already managing director of Leonardo's aircraft division, "will be the first CEO at Edgewing".
