An international team of well control experts from the United States has been mobilised to control the gas leak from a well of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district.

More than 1,500 people from surrounding areas were evacuated after a blowout at well number RDS 147A of rig number SKP 135 of the ONGC’s Rudrasagar oilfield at Barichuk in Bhatiapar on June 12. The well was outsourced to SK Petro Services, a private firm.

“The team of experts from the U.S. is expected to reach the site by the evening of June 20 to augment the response with specialised expertise,” a statement from the ONGC said on Thursday (June 19, 2025).

“We are continuing to make concerted efforts to control the gas discharge from Well 147A. Multiple junk shot operations using different combinations of materials and pressure ranges have been undertaken,” the statement said.

On June 12, a team led by ONGC director (technology and field services) Vikram Saxena took over the operational control of the affected well.
