Keir Starmer has admitted the Channel situation is getting worse and hinted visas could be slashed for countries that fail to tackle migrants.

The PM delivered a grim assessment as pictures emerged of migrants battling through teargas grenades on a beach near Calais this morning before setting off for Britain.

A Downing Street spokesman said Sir Keir and Emmanuel Macron agreed during a meeting at the G7 in Canada that things were 'deteriorating'.

The pair believe that 'migration should be a key focus' and they should 'continue to work closely with other partners to find innovative ways to drive forward progress', according to a No10 readout.

Speaking to reporters at the gathering of powerful nations this evening, Sir Keir said: ‘Look, there's a serious situation in relation to the Channel crossings. It is a serious challenge that requires serious responses to it.’
