A boating company has been granted a licence to sell alcohol on its premium rental boats - despite fears of a return to 'carnage' on London's quaint canals.

GoBoat's application was opposed by nearly 40 local residents who said they had witnessed public sex, nudity, vomiting, drug use, harassment and even punters using their gardens as toilets when they were previously allowed to drink.

Barge owners and those living along the capital's waterways claimed they'd also seen 'threats of violence' and 'appalling' drunk driving of the vessels - saying they'd fought 'very hard' to get alcohol banned from the boats previously.

Despite their complaints, GoBoats has successfully applied for a licence to sell alcohol to customers hiring boats in a new premium service called GoBoat Luxe.

The company says the new service will offer a 'serene and well-managed boating experience' and insists it will not be a return to unsupervised drinking.
