Three pilgrims, who were on a padayatra to Chinnasalem from Srimushnam, were killed on the spot and four others injured after a speeding car mowed them down on the Vriddhachalam-Salem national highway in the early hours of Wednesday (June 11, 2025).
The deceased were identified as Irudayaraj, 40, Stella, and Stephie of Varadarajanpettai near Srimushnam. The police said that a group of devotees had taken out a padayatra to St. Anthony’s Church in Melnariyappanur near Chinnasalem. They had been walking near the railway overbridge at Manalur when a speeding car hit them at around 3.15 a.m.
While the three died on the spot, four others sustained injuries and were admitted to the Vriddhachalam General Hospital. A case has been registered.
