The Kerala High Court on Tuesday sought the State government’s response to a petition seeking to check the dynamic pricing strategy adopted by multiplex operators for film tickets.
The petitioner pointed out that several States such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, had taken legal measures to cap cinema ticket prices and ensure affordability for the public. The Karnataka government had even issued executive directions capping multiplex prices at ₹200. The absence of such a legal framework in the State had created unjustifiable discrimination among citizens. Cinema chains such as PVR, INOX, Cinepolis, and Carnival Cinemas routinely escalated ticket prices based on demand, time slots, and release status. The petitioner sought a directive to the State government to frame and enforce ticket pricing regulations for cinema theatres, including multiplexes.
