This article includes spoilers for “And Just Like That...” Season 3, Episode 1.Fans of “Sex and the City,” rejoice! Well, that is, if you’ve been anticipating the new episodes of “And Just Like That...” because Season 3 premiered Thursday on Max, with new episodes streaming weekly. The season picks up with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan (John Corbett) in a long-distance relationship, sending postcards back and forth between New York and Virginia. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is back on the dating scene after that mess of a relationship with Che Diaz (Sara Ramírez). Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is embroiled in some dog park drama (yawn!).Seema (Sarita Choudhury) is also dealing with a long-distance relationship and failing to connect with Ravi (Armin Amiri). Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) is working on her documentary about unsung women in history — and is receiving a bit of pushback from studio executives.HuffPost staff members chatted about the Season 3 premiere, analyzed the Carrie-Aidan relationship, clocked some classic “Sex and the City” callbacks and begged for some better storylines for a few characters. And of course, we talked about THAT hat. Read on below.Carrie Bradshaw Is Somehow Still Being Utterly Stupid About Love In ‘And Just Like That’For some reason, I thought they had actually broken up for real at the end of Season 2. I recall that Aidan’s son Wyatt was having issues and then was drinking and crashed a car, then I had to Google some recaps to remember that Aidan asked Carrie to wait for him for FIVE YEARS. I’m sorry, but that seems like a breakup to me? So I was definitely confused as to why she was sending him postcards in the mail. Like, why? I just wanted to scream, “Girl, STAND UP,” the whole episode. Also, it was telling watching Miranda and Charlotte make faces while Carrie was explaining their situation. Both of them looked like they wanted to say, “Girl, let’s move on.” But you know who would have said that????? Samantha. Oh, how I miss you. — ErinCarrie, Carrie, Carrie. At this point in the franchise, I should be used to Carrie acting completely and utterly stupid over the man in her life, but somehow she still finds ways to surprise me. Aidan asking her to wait FIVE WHOLE YEARS while he focuses on being a father absolutely would’ve been the end of that relationship if I were in her shoes. But this is Carrie we’re talking about. So, at this post-Mr. Big widow stage, I guess she has no problem waiting around. She seems like she’s enjoying Aidan’s blank Virginia postcards to fill the void of their long-distance relationship. In her world, that makes perfect sense! But seriously, when is Carrie going to stop shrinking her wants for the men she decides to date? She needs to take a page out of Seema’s book (more on that later). I don’t see how her arrangement is going to last through the season, much less this weird five-year period Aidan proposed. I hate to say it, but they’re too old to be playing these games. Give us Carrie-Aidan full time or nothing at all! — NjeraI simply don’t believe Carrie loves this man, let alone loves him enough to put up with this cursed five-year plan. I will say it is so Carrie to find a blank postcard romantic. She loves a romantic gesture that everyone else finds a little weird! She probably thinks Aidan asking her to wait five years for him is romantic, too. Good for her, I guess. — LydiaI was exasperated by Aidan’s wildly implausible five-year proposal for Carrie at the conclusion of Season 2. If anything, I’d think they want to be more impulsive in their relationship, given all the time that’s passed. So I guess I’m relieved they’ve decided to gloss over some of the specifics with this pen pal situation. It’s still very bizarre, but at least it justifies keeping John Corbett on the cast roster. — Curtis At Last, Miranda Is Moving On From Che Diaz On ‘And Just Like That’I’m loving that Rosie O’Donnell has popped up with a few on-screen roles in the last few years. She was on “Hacks” earlier this season as herself. And then, she was also on my show “The L Word: Generation Q” for a couple seasons, too. (That show was canceled too soon!) This time, she is a nun named Mary who quickly falls for Miranda at a gay bar. I haven’t watched ahead so I can’t tell if O’Donnell’s character will return, but I hope we get to see Miranda date a lot in this season. I want some fun for my girl. — ErinYes, Erin. After the Che Diaz fiasco, I’m glad to see Miranda back on the prowl. Hopefully, she learns how to be less awkward at the lesbian bars, but I give her an E for effort. I love that her first hook-up of the season is another unhinged encounter, this time with a nun played by O’Donnell. I knew from the moment we saw her at the bar with Miranda that it was going to be nothing but shenanigans, but I was entertained nonetheless. I like Miranda when she’s happy and dating, not stressed over her divorce and stuck in a weird situationship. More of this energy this season! — NjeraThis encounter reminded me of one of my all-time favorite storylines from the original series: Friar Fuck. Samantha spies a hot priest across the street and tries to bed him, albeit unsuccessfully. He’s a lot more committed to the cloth than Mary is, apparently. That episode gives us one of my favorite Samantha lines: “I masturbated all afternoon to my priest.” This show really isn’t the same without her…Anyway, I did really enjoy the way Rosie played this character. The look on her face when Miranda found her in Times Square with her custom M&Ms had me laughing out loud. But Miranda showing up there and feeling the need to communicate with Mary at all is so out of character for the Miranda we know from the original series (as is … so much else). — LydiaI caught 1992’s “A League of Their Own” on TV last week and was reminded of just how great Rosie can be with well-written comedic material, so I was excited to see her as Mary. If my memory serves me well, she’s not had many previous opportunities to play queer women on screen, despite having been a high-profile member of the LGBTQ+ community herself. And yes, Lydia — I also thought the nun revelation was a great callback to Friar Fuck in Season 4 of the original series! — Curtis Carrie Bradshaw’s Humongous Hat On ‘And Just Like That’ Is Truly UnbelievableLook, Carrie is known for some daring wears on “Sex and the City.” But this big ass hat took my breath away. It just immediately reminded me of that episode of “Succession” when Cousin Greg brought that date with a “ludicrously capacious” bag to Logan’s funeral. That hat is “ludicrously capacious”! — Erin“And Just Like That” may be my go-to hate-watch, but I love tuning in for the fashion. That hat and the sheer dress-overcoat combo Carrie wears at the top of the episode are my faves so far. — NjeraI hated the hat for five seconds and then I loved it. It’s giving Strawberry Shortcake on steroids. Wearing a bizarre accessory with no explanation is so Carrie. I do love seeing how her fashion has evolved over time, but this took me back in the best way. — Lydia ‘And Just Like That’ Isn’t Doing Seema Any JusticeSeema should really talk to Carrie again about how to handle a long-distance relationship, because she seems like a pro. She looked so stunning in the black lingerie she wore for her video call with Ravi (the girls were sit-ting) — too bad he was too engrossed in moviemaking down in Egypt to pay her any mind. It’s sweet that he came back to New York with a flower bouquet for Seema, but that didn’t nearly make up for all the effort she’s been putting forth. She tolerated location scouting for his movie while packed in that tiny van and let him cancel on lunch (and dinner) reservations. I cheered when she finally put her foot down and told him she had had enough of being pushed to the side. After all, she did try. And S/O to that badass exit: “Great last line. Roll credits.” — NjeraYes, Njera! Carrie, take some notes. I love that Seema feels no pressure to settle for a man who doesn’t meet her (pretty reasonable!) relationship expectations. Of all the new cast members, Seema is the one I’d most want to watch in her own spinoff. She’s complex and layered but consistently brings the laughs. No one can replace Samantha, but Seema does a pretty good job of filling the void left by her departure. — LydiaI'm still not over how incredible Sarita Choudhury looked in that Zoom scene. Love her. — Erin‘And Just Like That’ Needs To Figure Out What It’s Doing With Lisa And HerbertThree seasons in, and Lisa and Herbert still don’t feel like they have any real stake in the show. I fear LTW and Herbert are going to get the same treatment Dr. Nya (Karen Pittman) got before she left the show (or was written off? Will Season 3 even address that?). LTW’s PBS documentary and Herbert running for city comptroller can’t be the most engrossing storylines they have this season, not after they fumbled LTW’s pregnancy plot last season by tiptoeing around abortion. I need the writers to give this couple more if they’re going to stick around. — NjeraI’m a little annoyed that we're dragging this city comptroller race into another season. No disrespect to Herbert, but I don’t really tune into this show for his or any other man’s storyline. I’m more interested in seeing LTW interact with the other women, so I hope we get more of that this season. — LydiaAgree. I was very underwhelmed by this plotline for them. I need them to either be having fun in their relationship or actually having sex, or, something. It’s just giving tired yet ambitious Black couple — and I don’t need to watch that on TV. At least not on this show. — ErinCharlotte’s ‘And Just Like That’ Storyline Just Hit A New LowI will be livid if I have to slog through some boring storylines for Charlotte York Goldenblatt all season. This time she gets caught up in some dog drama with another dog mom at the park. Apparently, Mr. Burton was wrongfully accused of attacking another dog. Thankfully, this arc with Mr. Burton was over by the end of the episode, but man, they gotta write better scenes for Charlotte — and I don't need them to revolve around her kids, either. — ErinYeah, it’s kind of cringe how Charlotte doesn’t really have anything going on outside of the kids, Harry and this damn dog. Love Mr. Burton, but this false dog accusation storyline was such a snooze. Just because Charlotte is the only one still married between her, Carrie and Miranda doesn’t mean they can’t make her life more interesting. — NjeraI have nothing to say about this boring storyline. Next! — Lydia LOL. It really seems like “And Just Like That” needs to figure out what it wants to do with its married couples. — ErinAt Least 1 Character On ‘And Just Like That’ Is Trying To Fill The Void Left By Samantha JonesWell, I’m definitely glad somebody addressed this nonsensical long-distance relationship. It was true to Anthony’s form for him to question and speak up with his opinions on the Carrie-Aidan dynamic. I wonder how long this relationship will be dragged out this season. Don’t get me wrong; I like Aidan, but this doesn’t seem like it’s gonna work for Ms. Bradshaw. — ErinThank God Anthony is still around to knock some sense into Carrie. Even if she refuses to listen, I’m glad he’s the voice of reason here because someone has to point out how ridiculous she sounds. Saying, “I don’t know when my boyfriend will be back in town” is a clear red flag to a sane person. But again, this is Carrie, so it’s going to take some more failing for her to realize she has to confront this long-distance tension with Aidan sooner or later. — NjeraThis Awkward Phone Sex Moment On ‘And Just Like That’ Is Almost Too Cringe To WatchI cringed the entire way through this scene. Phone sex scenes are already uncomfortable to watch for me, but when they’re not even sexy, it just makes things weird. I was so baffled that Aidan called Carrie drunk and horny in his truck, and even more so when she faked an orgasm over the phone. But as strange as this scene was, I think it just emphasized how obtuse this long-distance relationship is. They can’t even get phone sex right. How are they supposed to make it while states apart?! — NjeraFrom his truck no less. I would have loved a classic “SATC” morning-after brunch debrief with the girls following this mess. Just think of the one-liners Samantha would have delivered and the phone sex advice she would have given Carrie. We needed Miranda to talk about the time she got into a pretty decent phone sex relationship with a fellow lawyer from Chicago in Season 3. – LydiaWe Need Rosie O'Donnell To Stick Around 'And Just Like That' For A WhileI love that “And Just Like That” found a way to fit a “Wicked” joke in since we’re obviously not escaping the musical anytime soon. I need O’Donnell’s character to stick around longer off this scene alone. She doesn’t even need to be tied to Miranda, just have her stick around NYC and make random cameos throughout the season — we could use that consistent comedic relief. — NjeraThis scene felt like a nice wink at Rosie’s talk show days, when she offered a generation of viewers — including Yours Truly in adolescence — a glimpse at the magic of Broadway from our living rooms. She really instilled a love for stars like Patti LuPone (who is also set to appear on the show this season) and Bernadette Peters in me at an early age, but that’s a discussion for another time. Having her sing a “Wicked” song was cute, topical and felt true to the types of tourists you’d find milling about Times Square after sundown. — Curtis Here’s What We’re Hoping For On Season 3 Of ‘And Just Like That’Did we notice that they didn’t wrap up the episode with an “And just like that…” closing line? I wonder if they’re dropping that, same as the original series dropped Carrie talking to the camera and the man-on-the-street interviews. — LydiaI’m so glad you brought that up! I was definitely surprised we didn’t get a closing line from Carrie to poke fun at the episode’s events. It’s almost like Carrie was lost for words after that call to Aidan, so maybe that means there’s a lot of unfinished business to settle there. I think it’s great that the show brought Aidan back to revive his and Carrie’s romance, but I can’t take another messy round of these two trying to get on the same page. If they can’t figure out the long distance, I think Carrie should just stick to being single. Hell, she should join Miranda in the dating pool and meet someone new! Anything to get her — and us — off this roller coaster.I hope Seema finds someone who fits her lifestyle better. She’s the most put-together out of all the single folks, so I’m really rooting for her. I also hope LTW and Herbert have a bigger show presence through the rest of the season. And just more interesting storylines all around! I can’t hate-watch this show properly if it’s too boring to get through. — Njera
