Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday announced a big step forward in the renewal of Caivano with the start of the procedure for new social housing in the former Camorra-ridden and teen-crime-dogged Naples-area town.
Caivano became the centre of national attention in 2023 when the teen gang rape of two cousins aged 10 and 12 shocked Italy, sparking an urban regeneration scheme and changes to youth criminal law.
"Today I am happy to announce one more step for the future of Caivano," the premier said in a video message.
"The call for tenders has been published for the redevelopment of the council properties in the Parco Verde district - housing that was built after the Irpinia earthquake in 1980 for those who no longer had a roof over their heads but which has been completely abandoned over the last 40 years.
"Unfortunately, in many cases the homes fell into the hands of people convicted of Camorra-related crimes.
