Dear Vanessa,

I'm 59 and was planning to work until 65, but my daughter has asked me to retire early to help care for her two young children.

She and her husband both work full-time and say they can't afford full-time daycare. I love my grandkids deeply, and I want to help - but this wasn't part of my retirement plan.

I still have a mortgage, and I'm worried about running out of money later. My daughter says they'll 'help where they can', but nothing is in writing.

She's even said that down the track I could probably move in with them, and they'd build a granny flat or something. I'm torn between family duty and financial security. What should I do?
