'He concentrates far too much on football,' a teacher at City of Leicester Boys wrote on Gary Winston Lineker's last school report card. 'He'll never make a living at that.'
In the end, while he was one of England's greatest ever footballers, it was only after retiring that Lineker earned most of his wealth through working as a TV presenter.
Aside from hosting Match of the Day for 26 years, Lineker was known for fronting Walkers crisps commercials having originally signed a £200,000 deal in 1994.
He has made further millions through Goalhanger Podcasts, makers of The Rest Is History series and its spin-offs about politics, football, entertainment and money.
But the 64-year-old has also become notorious in recent years for a series of major controversies over outspoken political comments he has posted on social media.
