Gary Lineker has been branded 'an egotist who mistook celebrity for moral authority' as he stands poised to quit the BBC over an 'anti-semitic' post.

The long-standing sports broadcaster was condemned for a now-deleted Instagram video story he shared that featured a rat emoji.

Mr Lineker, 64, apologised unreservedly for the 'mistake' saying 'that image does not reflect my views'.

Now, the Campaign for Antisemitism (CAA) has hit out at the broadcaster claiming his departure was 'long overdue', with the organisation going so far as to suggest he was a 'rot at the heart' of the BBC.

Mr Lineker was formerly captain for the England football team. He scored 48 goals in 80 England appearances before presenting Match Of The Day since 1999.
