Russia has expanded its deployed nuclear warheads to 1,796, reaching its highest operational level since 2017, according to a SIPRI report.

SIPRI estimates that Russia had 1,796 nuclear warheads deployed on launchers as of January 2026, a 14% increase since 2020 amid growing nuclear threats from Russian officials.

Over the past year, Russia has increased its stock of nuclear warheads deployed on missiles and bombers by 78 to 1,796, marking a nine-year high.
