A Los Angeles artist disappeared into a Puerto Rican forest and spent 40 years building a bizarre underground home from discarded materials

A Los Angeles artist spent about four decades creating a unique underground home in the forests of Puerto Rico, turning discarded materials into a maze of tunnels, chambers and artworks. Known as Termitopia, the structure sits on a mountain near Las Marías and was built by Brian Birdsall, who moved away from Los Angeles and made a life in the Puerto Rican countryside.
