Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to pay Rs 2 lakh in interim compensation to the husband of Mumtaz Begum, who was detained and sent to Bangladesh after a foreigners' tribunal declared her a foreigner. The court noted that her husband and adult family members were not informed about her detention or removal.

Mumtaz Begum had been arrested from Nagaon foreigners tribunal in violation of the court order.

This is the first such instance where a court has imposed a cost on the state for pushing a person into Bangladesh, in violation of deportation rules. | India News
