Publish anomalies list like Puducherry, demands Congress

With the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise now in the notice phase, and electors facing challenges in responding to notices related to anomalies that have reached over 60 lakh, clamour for greater transparency, including publication of anomaly lists, is growing louder.According to Hyderabad District Congress Committee (DCC) president Syed Khalid Saifullah, booth level officers and their superiors have been unable to provide booth level agents with lists of electors whose names figure among the anomalies. He said Telangana should take a cue from Puducherry, which has published constituency-wise anomaly lists online.“The Supreme Court, in R. Siva vs. Election Commission of India, has directed the display of names of those listed under logical discrepancies at various government offices. The Puducherry administration has put the list online. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Telangana, should take a leaf from this and ensure that the same is done in Telangana,” Mr. Saifullah said, adding that many BLOs were clueless of whether such a consolidated list exists.Congress leader P. Rajesh Kumar submitted a representation to the CEO of Telangana to this effect, underscoring that there was considerable anxiety among people. The representation urged the CEO to publish constituency-wise and part-wise lists online in a downloadable PDF format. In addition, hearing schedules should also be made publicly available.“Maintain a daily or weekly dashboard/report on the portal summarising the status of notices served, responses received, and cases resolved during the exercise,” the representation reads.Publishing these lists, the Congress leaders argued, would allay fears, significantly reduce confusion and lessen reliance on physical copies of notices delivered by BLOs.Meanwhile, several electors said that they were confused over the process of responding to notices. An elector who was in Bengaluru on a work assignment said that her BLO had contacted to inform her that there was a notice issued in her name, and that the hearing was the very next day.Others pointed who had responded to the notices online were unsure of whether to attend hearings. An elector when the BLO was informed of the notice having being responded to online by uploading relevant documents, the latter stated that it would be wise to not take chances and appear at the hearing.
