Novak Djokovic was moved to tears as he crashed out of the US Open in a physically punishing first-round defeat to Argentinean Mariano Navone. Djokovic, 39, vomited on court numerous times throughout the match and battled cramp, back and shoulder issues, and the humidity in New York. The 24-time Grand Slam winner became visibly upset in the fifth set as he headed to his first first-round exit in a Grand Slam tournament since 2006. After the match, Djokovic said he had “an awful feeling on the court” and admitted he was dealing with an unspecified “health condition” which had hampered his progress on court in recent years.

The 39-year-old Djokovic hadn’t lost in the first round of a major since early in his career, in 2006.
