A new study of 892 people across seven experiments found that taking screenshots may make it harder to remember the information being captured. Participants not only had poorer memory for screenshotted artwork but also struggled to recall which images they had actually captured. Researchers suggest cognitive offloading, divided attention and attentional disengagement could explain the effect, while stressing that screenshots can still help memory when they are reviewed later.
