Grayson fatally shot Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, inside her home in July 2024 after she called 911 to report a suspected prowler. The shooting, which occurred after Grayson claimed he feared Massey would throw boiling water on him, sparked widespread protests following the release of bodycam footage. Grayson was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2023, which recently advanced to Stage 4 prior to a denied request for medical release. Attorneys representing Massey's family offered prayers to Grayson's family while stating that his death in custody does not bring Sonya back.
