New research from Michigan researchers suggests that lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes may live far longer than previously believed. The study, published in the Journal of Fish Biology, examined decades of growth records from tagged fish and found that many lake sturgeon could survive for around 200 years, with some potentially approaching 300 years. Scientists traditionally estimate their ages using growth rings in fin spines, but those rings become harder to interpret in older fish.
