More than 100 people have been killed after a gold mine collapsed in the Central African Republic (CAR). On Tuesday (18 August), a landslide in the village of Zamboye, near the Cameroon border, caused the low-tech artisanal gold mine to cave in. Eyewitness footage shows a slope collapsing onto a crowd of people, as others at the site fled to safety. The death toll is likely to rise, said Bertrand Be Yangué, a member of the Zamboye youth council, with many people still missing and others trapped under the rubble. Authorities had launched an investigation into the incident, local media in CAR reported.

The death toll from a gold mine collapse in the Central African Republic has risen to over 100. A Red Cross volunteer involved in relief efforts confirmed the numbers on Wednesday.
