The 166.8km stage from Melgaco to Fafe was neutralised by race organisers after the fatal accident occurred. Tarling was competing for the NSN Development Team, having signed a two-year contract ahead of the 2025 cycling season. Both the Volta a Portugal organisers and the NSN Development Team issued statements expressing deep heartbreak and offering condolences to Tarling's family, friends, and teammates. A promising talent in the sport, Tarling had won three bronze medals at the 2024 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships, while his elder brother Josh is a professional world champion cyclist.
