The nose theory: When the British measured the noses of Indians

British administrator Herbert Hope Risley used nose measurements and other physical traits to classify Indians by supposed race and caste. His theories influenced the 1901 Census and colonial administration but were later discredited as racial pseudoscience that oversimplified Indias complex social identities.
