500-year-old island with 22 billion barrels of oil mysteriously vanished from the ocean: Mexico’s ghost island of Bermeja

Isla Bermeja is recorded in history as a small, rocky island located in the Gulf of Mexico, almost 100 kilometres off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. For over 400 years, it was a fixed visible point on official maps, situated at the coordinates 22 degrees 33 minutes north and 91 degrees 22 minutes west.
