On Wednesday night, two officers were hospitalised after one was struck with a rock and another was seriously bitten, breaking the skin, while intervening in a group trying to access a residential property. The unrest, which also saw property damage on Tuesday night including smashed windows and attempted break-ins, is linked to fears that properties are being used to house asylum seekers. Brian Thompson, 68, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and released on bail, while another man remains in custody. Local MP Terry Jermy condemned the 'ugly scenes' and 'mob rule', stating that such behaviour undermines legitimate concerns about Home Office plans to house asylum seekers at RAF Barnham.
