The main Westminster parties, including Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats, have opted to boycott the by-election, dismissing it as a “stunt”. Tendring District Council confirmed a total of 34 candidates will stand in the 13 August by-election, believed to be a record for any parliamentary contest. Prominent challengers to Farage include satirical candidate Count Binface and actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox. Farage's vision of a “people versus the establishment” showdown has resulted in a diverse field, including three candidates from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and numerous independents.
