New Research Shows Community Monitoring Can Protect Vital Flapper Skate Breeding Grounds

A community-led monitoring project tracked a critical egg-laying habitat of the critically endangered flapper skate for more than two and a half years. Divers, underwater cameras and acoustic tags revealed that skates repeatedly use the site for reproduction, egg cases hatch successfully throughout the year and local volunteers can play a major role in protecting species on the brink of extinction.
