Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thích Nhất Hạnh believed happiness can work both ways. In his famous quote, he said that sometimes joy creates a smile, while at other times a simple smile can create joy. The lesson encourages people to use small, positive actions to shift their emotional state. Known as the “father of mindfulness”, Nhất Hạnh influenced Western Buddhist practices and received several honours, including the 2015 Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award and an honorary doctorate from the Education University of Hong Kong.
