Researchers at the Technical University of Dresden examined discarded apheresis bags from 34 patients undergoing treatment for high cholesterol. They found that levels of specific per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including PFOA and PFOS, dropped by up to 25 per cent after two double-filtration plasmapheresis sessions. While promising for PFAS removal, the study did not yield clear results regarding the removal of microplastics from the blood using this method. Scientists cautioned that further controlled clinical trials are necessary to conclusively prove the technique's efficacy, stressing that preventing exposure to these chemicals remains the priority.
