US Navy replaces the world's most heavily armed conventional missile submarines, the Ohio-class SSGNs, each capable of carrying 154 Tomahawks, by formally redesignating 19 Virginia-class submarines fitted with the Virginia Payload Module as SSGNs. The announcement, made on 3 August 2026, comes as USS Georgia, the first of four Ohio-class guided missile submarines, begins retirement after four decades of service.
