Lebanon’s army: Dreaming of elusive joy

Lebanon marked Army Day on Saturday. On Aug. 1, 1945, France — which had held mandatory power over Syria and Lebanon since 1920 — handed the military units under its control in the Levant to the national government of independent Lebanon. However, the occasion this year fell under abnormal circumstances. One might point out that independent Lebanon has rarely known “normal circumstances,” which is true, but the present moment is exceptional in every respect. To begin with, a significant part of Lebanon is under Israeli occupation.
