The incident occurred on July 5 near Greycliff, Montana, after a paddleboard and raft struck a bridge, sending four people into the water. While three individuals managed to swim to shore, one man remained caught in the river's current, clinging to a cooler. Thomas, who had extensively practiced with his lariat on his family ranch, successfully threw the rope to the struggling man and pulled him to safety. Authorities, including Sweet Grass County Sheriff Alan Ronneberg, credited Thomas with saving the man's life and awarded him a certificate of achievement for his heroic actions.
