Support for data centres goes back 40 years

Data centres are power hungry – but they don’t have to be a burden on NZ’s grid

Datagrid secured NZ$3.5B approval for a 280 MW AI data centre in Invercargill (2028), becoming New Zealand's second-largest power consumer. Flexible scheduling of batch AI training during high renewable periods lets data centres absorb surplus wind/solar and reduce grid costs by NZ$1.5B per gigawatt.
