California divers spent two years clearing kelp-eating urchins and planting young kelp; underwater forests returned to reefs that had been barren for years

Extensive underwater forests of giant kelp once stretched off southern California, providing habitat, food, and breeding grounds for hundreds of marine species, according to NOAA. Over time, these forests gave way to barren reefs because of pollution, habitat destruction and rising sea urchin numbers.
