In 1959, Boston closed a harbour island dump where underground fires smouldered for years; Big Dig soil later sealed the waste before Spectacle Island reopened as a park in 2006

Visitors to Spectacle Island will now find hiking paths, hillside greenery, harbour views and wide-open spaces far removed from the island’s past. Ferries carry visitors across Boston Harbour for an afternoon of exploring the island’s landscape or watching birds.
