Construction of South Africa’s new deep space ground station on schedule

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has confirmed that construction of its new Deep Space Ground Station, at Matjiesfontein in the Karoo region of the Western Cape province, is on schedule and should be completed within the next 18 to 24 months. A project such as this requires the highest construction, engineering and quality standards and these are being met. Matjiesfontein is SANSA’s second ground station, the first being the long-established complex at Hartebeesthoek, west of Pretoria, in Gauteng province. The Matjiesfontein ground station is fully funded by government, through the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation. Once completed, it will strengthen the country’s position in the global space sector and reinforce its participation in international space science programmes.
