Authorities are treating the incident as an Islamic extremist terror attack, with the German-born suspect having previously sought to join the militant Islamic State group. Ballout had a prior conviction in May for preparing a serious act of violence and publishing Islamic State propaganda, for which he received a suspended sentence. The attack, which occurred a few hundred metres from the Pride closing party, has prompted concerns about security at other major events in Germany.
