‘We got written assurances’: Sonam Wangchuk explains why he ended his 26-day fast | Watch

Activist Sonam Wangchuk said he ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving 'written assurances' from Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh who 'came here' at 'about 12:30 at night'. Wangchuk said the government assured that 'no legal action, FIRs, etc. will be taken against' students who protested at Jantar Mantar and in the 'Sansad Chalo' march on July 20; that families of students who died in the paper leak, 'more than 20 in number, will be given appropriate compensation'; and that there 'will be a thorough discussion and debate in Parliament' on education and examinations. On the demand for Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation, Wangchuk said officials 'were unable to give me any assurance as to when this would happen' and that he ended the fast because 'my life is important' to 'continue the struggle'.
